General Description
The Washington State Legislative Internship Program in the Senate hires around 40-50 college students to work as session staff while learning about the legislative process. The Assistant Civic Education Coordinator assists with all aspects of the program and has primary responsibility for most administrative tasks. Additionally, the assistant helps train and provide ongoing support for interns in their office work. This role works collaboratively with the Senate Civic Education Director, Senate Civic Education Deputy Director, House Civic Education Director, and the House Assistant Civic Education Coordinator.
The Assistant Civic Education Coordinator is a full-time temporary (December 5th – May 5th) position assisting with all aspects of the Civic Education Programs such as the Legislative Internship Program, Page Program, and Civic Education Day.
Responsibilities
Aides with social media management.
Along with the Civic Education Director and the Deputy, serves as a liaison with member offices.
Assists in the communication, scheduling, and administrative management of the Senate Page Program.
Assists in the planning and delivery of orientation for the Legislative Internship Program.
Assists in the planning and implementation of the intern mock legislature and Faculty Coordinator Day.
Assists in the planning and oversight of Civic Education Day.
Leads and participates in various intern trainings, tours, and events throughout orientation and session.
Manages the room reservations and photography requests for all guest speakers.
Mentor undergraduate interns by providing coaching on writing, bill tracking, and research assignments, as well as modeling professional and non-partisan conduct.
Provide guidance and logistical support for intern-led projects, including arranging speaker panels and tours.
Provides administrative support and record keeping for intern attendance and the hiring process, including ePAFs, and intern files.
Researches, prepares, and updates written materials for training and program development of all civic education programs, lesson plans, and resources.
Works collaboratively with the Senate Civic Education Director and Deputy to train, supervise and mentor Senate interns.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS OF A SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE
Ability to maintain and demonstrate nonpartisanship.
Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with a diverse range of interns, legislative community members, and civic education organizations.
Ability to work independently, exercise professional judgment, maintain confidentiality, establish timelines and goals, meet deadlines, and troubleshoot in stressful situations.
Highly organized and able to multitask accurately and efficiently under time constraints.
Knowledge of the legislative process and state government.
Participation in the Legislative Internship Program.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook and Teams, and Zoom.
Strong writing, editing, and verbal communication skills, including knowledge of protocol for professional correspondence.
ADDITIONAL PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree.
Experience working at least one session.
Experience working with college students, higher education institutions, and/or K-12 schools and youth organizations.
Benefits
The salary for this position is $3880 monthly. This position is not eligible for benefits due to the project duration.
